LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Variety.com) – “The Batman,” a gloomy superhero storey starring Robert Pattinson, won the box office again again.
The picture grossed $66 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to a healthy $238.5 million. After only 10 days in theatres, “The Batman” is the highest-earning film of 2022, as well as the second-highest grossing film since the inception of COVID-19. Only “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which grossed $792 million in North America, has made more money in the domestic box office in the last two years.
Ticket sales for “The Batman” fell 41% after its launch, a better hold than other comic book tentpoles, especially in epidemic times. Other COVID-era movies, such as “The Suicide Squad,” “Eternals,” “Black Widow,” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” had drop-offs ranging from 53% to 71% in their second appearances.
Positive reviews and word-of-mouth have kept fans returning to see “The Batman,” which also stars Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Paul Dano as the Riddler. The PG-13 “The Batman,” directed by Matt Reeves and running for three hours, provides a harsh look at Bruce Wayne’s early days as “the world’s best detective.”
“The Batman,” which cost $200 million, was a much-needed commercial success for Warner Bros. Following the simultaneous release of the studio’s full 2021 picture slate on HBO Max, “The Batman” marks the studio’s first exclusive theatrical release in 12 months. In the future, Warner Bros. has stated that it will hold its films in theatres for 45 days before releasing new titles on HBO Max.
Despite the fact that there were no fresh countrywide releases, “The Batman” easily topped the domestic charts. Tom Holland’s video game adaption “Uncharted” took second place with $9.2 million from 3,725 North American theatres. The PG-13 action-adventure has grossed $113 million in four weeks.
