DUBAI (Reuters) — Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman established a new business on Monday to develop and administer artificial intelligence technology in Saudi Arabia, a main objective in the country’s economic diversification efforts.

US President Donald Trump visits Saudi Arabia this week, the first stop on his Gulf trip, and artificial intelligence is anticipated to be a significant topic of conversation during Tuesday’s joint Saudi-US investment event in Riyadh.

The kingdom, the world’s largest crude exporter, is experiencing a huge economic and social transition as part of its Vision 2030 project, which intends to wean the economy off oil reliance.

It intends to build AI technology and infrastructure, including data centers, and to promote the kingdom as a worldwide centre for AI, positioning itself as a potential hub for AI work outside of the United States.

The new business, Humain, chaired by bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, would operate under the Public Investment Fund and provide AI services and goods such as data centers, AI infrastructure, cloud capabilities, and sophisticated AI models, according to the state news agency.

Salesforce (CRM.N) said earlier this year that it planned to invest $500 million in Saudi Arabia to advance artificial intelligence.
