LAHORE (SAYS Digital). The government has given a last warning to key social media companies, suggesting that stringent limitations similar to those imposed in Brazil will be implemented if Pakistani laws are not strictly followed.

Talal Chaudhry, Minister of State for Interior, and Aqeel Malik, Minister of State for Law and Justice, both stated that if infractions continued, the government would be forced to take similar measures to Brazil. Pakistan, they noted, is closely studying Brazil’s recent instance as a precedent.

According to authorities, Brazil briefly banned Twitter in 2024 after the company refused to erase accounts that promoted election-related falsehoods. The prohibition was revoked only after X paid a fee and designated a local representative.

Government officials have directed Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, Telegram, and X to open offices in Pakistan, use advanced AI tools to detect and eliminate terrorism-related accounts, share IP addresses with law enforcement, and implement effective filtering systems to prevent banned users from re-registering.

Authorities claimed multiple social media profiles were discovered to be related to organizations banned by the United States and the United Nations, posing major security dangers to the area.

According to sources, X is the least cooperative platform, whereas TikTok and Telegram are quite cooperative. Officials stated that all platforms received a full briefing on July 24, but their replies were considered inadequate.
