Imran khan and bushra bibi

RAWALPINDI: Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced to 17 years in prison in the Toshakhana-2 case by a special court on Saturday.

Special Judge Central Islamabad Shahrukh Arjumand delivered the decision at Adiala Jail, condemning the former prime minister and his wife on several offenses.

The court sentenced Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to 10 years in jail under Section 409 (criminal breach of trust) and 7 years under Sections 5, 2, and 47, for a total of 17 years.

The court also slapped a Rs16.45 million punishment on Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The sentences will run concurrently, per the court ruling.

The Toshakhana-2 lawsuit alleged that Imran Khan illegally kept a high-value Bulgari jewelry set obtained as a diplomatic gift during an official visit to Saudi Arabia.

Investigators claim that the gift was purposely underestimated, resulting in a loss of Rs32.85 million to the national exchequer.

Official documents show that the jewellery set was worth an estimated Rs75.66 million.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision on NAB reforms, the accountability court shifted the Toshakhana-II reference against Imran Khan and his wife from NAB to FIA.

The FIA appointed a three-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to look into the Toshakhana-II case.

The record of the Toshakhana-II referral was transferred to the Special Judge Central.

On July 13, the NAB re-arrested Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana-2 case, soon after they were granted bail in the “Iddat Nikah” case.

The case had a total of 20 witness statements.
