WASHINGTON (Reuters)— According to a person familiar with the situation, the Trump administration is considering banning the Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek from being used on US federal equipment owing to national security concerns.
US officials are concerned about DeepSeek’s management of client data, which the business claims is housed on Chinese servers, according to the Wall Street Journal, which reported the story first.
According to the Journal, federal officials are also considering banning the chatbot from app stores and limiting how US-based cloud service providers may distribute DeepSeek’s AI models to their clients. These conversations are still in their early stages.
DeepSeek’s low-cost AI models sparked a significant sell-off in global equities markets in January, with investors concerned that its arrival would pose a challenge to current AI industry behemoths.
On Thursday, a coalition of 21 state attorneys general urged Congress to approve legislation prohibiting the download and use of DeepSeek artificial intelligence software on government computers.
