Pakistan achieved the highest ODI run chase on Tuesday in a six-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in a group stage match of the Cricket World Cup 2023 at Hyderabad.

Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique, who played in his first world cup, played heroic unbeaten innings of 131 runs that allowed the Green Shirts to reach their target of 345 runs in 48.2 overs.

Pakistan’s pursuit got off to a shaky start when Imam-ul-Haq (1) and Babar Azam (10) were bowled out during a sluggish opening powerplay. Both wickets were grabbed by Dilshan Madushanka.

However, Abdullah Shafique, who scored his first century on the first day of the world cup and forged a significant partnership with, helped Pakistan steady the ship and lay the groundwork for future success.

After Matheesha Pathirana removed Shafique for 113 runs, Saud Shakeel took Rizwan’s place at the crease, although he was only marginally helpful. After Shakeel was eliminated at position 31 to ensure Pakistan’s second straight victory in the championship, Iftikhar maintained his momentum.
