According to Indian media, a couple in the Indian state of West Bengal sold their eight-month-old kid to buy an iPhone and support their vacation for posting content on Instagram.

According to the Indian Express, which cited police officials, local authorities acted when locals saw the couple’s recent purchase of a brand-new phone.

The World Bank has identified pockets of extreme poverty in West Bengal, which may contribute to suspicions in such situations. According to a 2022 PRS Legislative Research study, the region’s GDP per capita, an income metric, was at US$1,600, just slightly higher than the price of a new iPhone 14 in the country at the time.

According to a police officer reported by The Indian Express, the persons involved were named as Jaydev Ghosh and Sathi. The kid was sold to Priyanka Ghosh, who lives in the same area, according to police.

Following questioning, the mother admitted to the crime, admitting that the pair intended to use the money for state-wide excursions and content creation on Instagram Reels.

The mother of the kid and Priyanka were detained, according to the publication.

The cops successfully retrieved the infant. Authorities also claimed that the baby’s father intended to sell their seven-year-old kid, albeit the scheme never materialized. According to the report, the father is presently dodging authorities and is deemed a fugitive.
